Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer science fiction—it’s part of teens' daily lives. From generative text tools to mental health chatbots, young people are engaging with AI more than ever. The American Psychological Association (APA) recently shared key tips to help teens stay safe in this digital age.
1. Make Relationships Real—even with Virtual Tools
AI “companions” can feel personal, but they’re not human. Teens may mistake programmed empathy for real emotional connection. The APA recommends clear labels that identify AI as non-human, and stresses the importance of encouraging teens to talk to real people, especially when they’re upset.
Parent Tip: Ask your teen what AI tools they’re using and talk about the difference between real conversations and artificial ones.
2. Use AI Thoughtfully—for Growth, Not Escape
AI can help teens write papers, brainstorm ideas, or summarize reading. But relying too heavily on it may limit critical thinking or creativity.
Parent/Educator Tip: Encourage your teen to question AI-generated content—ask, “Does this make sense?” or “What would you add or change?”
3. Guard Against Harmful Content
AI systems aren’t perfect. They can share biased, violent, or manipulative content. The APA urges companies to filter content for youth and provide clear options for reporting harmful material.
Tip: Show teens how to block, report, and filter inappropriate content—and let them know you’re there to talk if something upsets them.
4. Protect Data and Identity
AI collects data constantly, including private messages, location info, or even images. The APA says youth data needs stronger protections and transparency.
Tip: Go through app settings with your teen. Help them understand who sees their data, and why it matters.
5. Teach AI Literacy—Together
Understanding how AI works is essential. That means teaching teens to recognize bias, fact-check AI content, and ask critical questions. The APA recommends building AI literacy into school lessons and home conversations.
Tip: Learn alongside your teen. Watch a video or read an article about how algorithms work, and talk about how AI makes decisions.
In Summary:
Talk openly about what AI tools your teen uses.
Promote critical thinking over blind trust in AI.
Set up filters and privacy controls together.
Make sure your teen knows their data rights.
Learn and grow together with AI.
